Mrs. Michaelis of Maverick County demonstrates the versatility of a quarter horse. Quarter horses are excellent for working cattle, playing polo, and racing short distances and are a favorite of rodeo performers. Mrs. Michaelis was considered one of the outstanding quarter horse breeders in the country.

An unidentified rural Texas woman mows weeds along a fence row with a machine pulled by a horse and a mule. Women performing such tasks may well have been most common during World War II, but this picture seems to depict an earlier time period. The elevated cistern in the center of the picture dates from a period when windmills were used to pump water, but no windmill is visible nor are any electric lines. Note the other pieces of horse- or mule-drawn equipment in the background. Storing such equipment outdoors and under trees appears to have been quite common on Texas farms between 1930 and 1960.
