Mrs. M. J. Allen of the Harrison Community near Waco tends a three-quarter-acre garden on her 235-acre tract of land in McLennan County. She grew twenty-five varieties of vegetables in the garden. In 1932 she preserved 480 containers of food and planned to do 600 in 1933. The fact that there is not a weed to be seen anywhere is a tribute to the skill and industriousness of Mrs. Allen.

Miss Alma Moerbe, a member of the Fedor Home Demonstration Club in Lee County, harvests fresh carrots from her home garden. Also growing in the garden are onions, cabbage, tomatoes, squash, corn, and cucumbers. Note that the tomatoes are neither staked nor caged as is done today by many gardeners.
