Mrs. Abner Enderbee harvests green beans in the garden adjoining her back yard in Cooke County. Although the plot was not specifically identified as a "Victory Garden," planting such plots during the 1940s was a very common thing to do in support of the American war effort. Extension Service staff estimated that 90 to 95 percent of farm and ranch households in Texas planted gardens during World War II to help provide food needed to feed themselves and American servicemen around the world. Note that on the left edge of the photograph are flowers. Mrs. Enderbee planted her flowers and vegetables together for convenience of cultivation. Also visible in the background are varieties of fruit trees.
