Mrs. J.T. Isom, a Yard Improvement Demonstrator in the Bois d'Arc community in Collin County, mows her lawn with a mower operated entirely with person power. Gasoline mowers were not in use at the time. She occasionally had some help from her husband in the lawn-mowing chore. The fruit trees in the background served as a screen between the yard and the fields, provided shade for the flock of white leghorn chickens, and furnished fruit for the pantry.

Even though Mrs. M. J. Norris rented this house seven miles south of Burleson in Johnson County, she devoted much effort to improving the yard. Mrs. Norris, a member of the Burleson Home Demonstration Club, described hers as a "friendship yard" because every shrub in it was either given to her by a member of her club or was started in her cutting bed from prunings given to her by neighbors.
