Mrs. Walter Collins cooks on the gas range in her family's new stone home in the Pilot Knob community of Travis County. Walter Collins, his three brothers, and all their families were involved in the 4-H Club and Agricultural Demonstration Club and worked with the county agent to improve their livelihood and their surroundings. In addition to the new gas range, Mrs. Collins had an electric refrigerator and a freezer full of beef, pork, and turkeys, all of which had been raised on their farm. The house also had a hot water heater, a washing machine, and a vacuum cleaner.

Mrs. E. R. Bogusch of Grit in Mason County and her six-year-old granddaughter, Charlene Bogusch, are preparing to bake a fruitcake. During 1943 Mrs. Bogusch baked and sold 2,816 pounds of fruitcake. This was her fourth year of baking these cakes. Most of the money she earned was spent improving her home. Her kitchen appears to be very modern, but she was proudest of her fully equipped bathroom.
