Mrs. C. A. Richardson harvests fresh vegetables from her frame garden in Karnes County. Wire netting on the sides was to keep chickens and small animals from getting access to the tender plants, while the slatted tops provided protection from the hot South Texas sun and also kept out predators. This garden appears to be level with the ground. Thus the frame appears to be there primarily to keep out chickens and animals. Also the soil seems suitable for cultivation so importing topsoil was not necessary. In colder regions of the state, frame gardens were built with solid wood walls and were covered completely to protect plants from frost. Most covers seem to have been cloth.
