Mrs. R. P. Garrett of Whites Chapel community, near Corsicana in Navarro County, models one dress she made out of feed sack material and holds up another one made from a combination of feed sack and white material. Mrs. Garrett also made pillowcases, dresser scarves, sheets, aprons, jackets, and laundry bags from the sack material. Because they had numerous farm animals, the Garretts had an over-abundance of the colorfully printed feed sacks. Mrs. Garrett sold the surplus sacks to her neighbors for fifteen cents each and used the money to purchase defense stamps. She also regularly performed several outside chores, including milking cows every evening.

On the 5,000-acre ranch she and her husband owned in Concho County, Mrs. Elon Hutchinson trapped a wide variety of animals including possums, skunks, foxes, and bobcats. She skinned and tanned the pelts, then dyed and plucked them to have furs which were both pretty and fashionable. She sold some of the pelts and used others to make coats. During her many years of trapping and sewing, Mrs. Hutchinson made as many as thirty fur coats in a year. She is shown here repairing one of her fur coats.
