Separatist radicals led by the brothers John and William Wharton called a “Consultation” of the people to meet and consider independence. The Consultation became Texas’ disastrous first attempt at a temporary government, on the one hand trying to prepare for defense of the colonies and, on the other hand, protesting its loyalty to Mexico. |
