Texas' control of her own empty lands again proved invaluable after the state Capitol, which had stood since 1853, burned in 1881. With no ready funds to build a replacement, more than three million acres in northwest Texas were appropriated to finance construction of the largest state capitol in the United States. The land was later managed as the famous XIT Ranch.
