Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo

Under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, some forty percent of the land area of Mexico passed to the United States. Mexico, in return, received a payment of $15 million. This territorial gain included vast gold and silver deposits in the Rocky Mountains and California, and the great port of San Francisco, which gave the United States a vastly improved trade position.
