Battle of Buena Vista
State Archives Division--Texas State Library

General Taylor engaged Santa Anna the following February at the Battle of Buena Vista. Santa Anna had come north with an army of 20,000, some three times the size of Taylor's. Santa Anna almost won the battle but was stymied by the combined efforts of two later Confederates: Jefferson Davis and Braxton Bragg. Despite the defeats, a naval blockade, and the loss of New Mexico and California, Mexico refused to concede.
