Texas Vote Ratifying Annexation
State Archives Division--Texas State Library

When the Texas Congress convened, Jones laid before them the peace treaty that England and France had convinced Mexico to endorse. The Congress was unanimous in spurning the Mexican treaty and accepting the American offer. Swept along by events, Jones set a date for the referendum, and the vote was overwhelming: for annexation 4,254 to 257; for the constitution 4,174 to 312.
