Mexico never recognized Texas, and she maintained a hostile attitude, in part because she was often provoked, as in Lamar's Santa Fé scheme. Mexico invaded Texas twice in 1842, causing several dozen casualties, and President Houston authorized a punitive expedition to the border. Popular sentiment in Texas demanded more, and Houston's own army commander, Alexander Somervell, joined in the call for a strike deep into Mexico.
