Two key players of Texas annexation are pictured in this remarkable daguerreotype: President Polk and James Buchanan, his Secretary of State and later President himself. Also pictured are Mrs. Polk and Harriet Lane, Buchanan's niece. The blurred figure at right is none other than Dolly Madison, widow of the fourth President.
