Revolution & Independence

The Mexican government recognized the hardships of the American settlers, and for some years governed the territory leniently. By 1835, however, new policies clashed with the Texans' desire to be governed by more democratic principles. A new Mexican President, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, suspended the constitution. Armed resistance began in October 1835, contending for full Mexican statehood, which, in Texans' view, was promised them in the Constitution of 1824.
