"The Republic of Texas Is No More" |
On February 28, 1845, the Congress of the United States extended an offer to the independent Republic of Texas to join the Union as the 28th state. The "Annexation of Texas" was accomplished on December 29 of that year, and on February 19, 1846, the flag of the Republic was lowered for the last time. Leading to the establishment of the United States as a power that stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific, annexation was an event of incalculable importance to world history.
