Museo Regional de Antropología de Yucatán, Mérida One of fourteen such sculptures found at Chichén Itzá, the Chacmool sits at the front entrance of temple buildings, probably to receive sacrificial offerings on the plate or disk held on its stomach. The first figure discovered was named "Chacmool" by a French archaeologist, who said the word meant "Tiger King." Now the name signifies all statues of this order. |
