Imperial Tenochtitlán

The Aztecs were, relatively speaking, latecomers to central Mexico. According to legend, they founded their capital, Tenochtitlán, in 1325, on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco. In the center of the island, they erected a great temple to honor their patron deity, Huitzilopochtli, and laid out the city in four surrounding quarters. Though the invading Spaniards greatly admired its splendor, comparing it to Venice, the city was destroyed in the conquest of 1521.
