| The Adobe Building Game by Carol Schlenk |
When Juan de Oņate journeyed through the southwest in 1598, he saw a dry, sun-baked landscape from which the American style of adobe architecture emerged. Although usually associated with the American southwest, adobe is among the oldest of all building materials. Examples of ancient adobe buildings can still be seen in the Middle East.
When the Spanish conquistadors brought adobe brick-making with them to the New World, that method of using earth as a building material merged with the pueblo building style of the Indians of the American southwest to create the famous "pueblo" architecture so prevalent in Arizona and New Mexico. In "The Adobe Building Game", you will investigate the process of building with adobe by sequencing the steps in the building process. |
