Santiago Mata-Indios
Don Felipe Guáman Poma de Ayala
For the Incas, Santiago must have epitomized the Spaniard as invincible conqueror. His name rang out as a battle cry at the beginning of all battles; and after the conquest, his powers were invoked to control rebel Indians. The Saint is said to have "appeared" in the Americas fourteen times between 1518 and 1892. One of these appearances was to Hernando Pizarro, during the siege of Cuzco in 1536. This event is represented in an expressive drawing by Don Felippe Guamán Poma de Ayala, the famous Indian chronicler, in his illustrated manuscript, "La primera Crónica y Buen Gobierno."
