13. A Geographical Survey |
In addition to reports submitted by explorers, systematic surveys were undertaken by the Spanish government. One survey, begun in 1577, included a 50-part questionnaire sent to all towns of Spaniards and Indians in the New World. Three questions requested maps for the regions being described. Often these maps were painted by native scribes, and they show a stunning mixture of painting traditions demonstrating the extent to which European and Indian cultures had then melded.
