In a letter of September 4, 1504, an Italian navigator named Amerigo Vespucci stated that the "Indies" were actually a "Mundus Novus," a New World. America was given its name by Martin Waldseemüller, a German cartographer and friend of Vespucci's, in an essay and map published in 1507.
