11. The Exchange of Languages

One of the first barriers to evangelization was that of language. Friars began to transcribe the languages of the Indians into the European alphabet, and they compiled Nahautl and Mixtec dictionaries and grammars, some of which were printed in Europe and New Spain. In this endeavor, missionaries followed the lead of Elio Antonio Martínez de Nebrija, greatest of the Spanish Renaissance humanists, whose Spanish-Latin dictionary was published around 1492.

Una de los primeros obstáculos en la labor de evangelización fue el lenguaje. Los frailes empe-zaron a transcribir las lenguas indígenas al alfabeto europeo y también recopilaron diccionarios y gramáticas de las lenguas nahuatl y mixteca, algunas de las cuales se imprimieron en Europa y en Nueva España. En este tipo de labor, los misioneros siguieron el ejemplo de Elio Antonio Martínez de Nebrija, el más grande humanista de la España Renacentista, cuyo diccionario español-latín se publicó alrededor de 1492.
