Perhaps the greatest of the humanists was a Dutch theologian, Desiderius Erasmus. A classical scholar and advocate of moderation and tolerance, he sought to combine study of the classics with the study of sacred writings. His most influential work was a Latin edition of the New Testament, based on the original Greek text.

El más grande humanista fue quizá el teólogo holandés Desiderio Erasmo. Erasmo, un erudito de la cultura clásica que abogaba por la tolerancia y la moderación, trató de combinar el estudio de los clásicos con el estudio de las Sagradas Escrituras. Su trabajo más importante fue una edición en latín del Nuevo Testamento basado en el texto original en griego.
