9. The Christian Humanists

The European Renaissance brought a rebirth of learning based on the Greek and Roman classics. A new awareness of human nature came to the fore, with a flowering of the arts and sciences. Scholars sought to understand the natural world, and a new spirit of inquiry stimulated study and learning. Hence arose a group of scholars called humanists, who believed in rational thinking which would illuminate the mysteries of God.

El Renacimiento europeo produjo un "renacimiento" del saber clásico (griego y romano). Nació en esta época una nueva conciencia de la naturaleza humana y hubo un florecimiento en las artes y en la ciencias. Las personas letradas se dedicaron a estudiar el mundo natural, y un nuevo espíritu inquisitivo estimuló la búsqueda de conocimiento. Surgió entonces un grupo de hombres de letras o humanistas que creían que el pensamiento racional podía resolver los misterios divinos.
