7. Animal Forms

Gold workers often depicted animals associated with religious beliefs. The jaguar, still a key figure in native religions, represented a spirit with great power for good or evil. Long-beaked birds were associated with fertility, as were frogs. Lizards were legendary symbols of wisdom. Sometimes the animal forms were stylized, like the two-headed animal, but they always reflect the world-view of the ancient peoples.
