6. The Human Image

The human figure was often schematized or stylized, as reflected in the pectorals on panel 2 and the Darien pectoral that appears on each panel. Faces and figures, however, were also presented realistically. The frequent appearance of masks on gold figures, or masks made of gold, suggests that masks played an important part in rituals and ceremonies.
