4. A Prehispanic Industry

While some people engaged in gold mining as a part-time activity in the dry season, various localities supported full-time miners and goldsmiths. The community of Buriticá was a true industrial center, collecting and processing raw ore and exchanging refined gold for food and other commodities. Gold thus moved along trade routes that ran from mountain heights to the coast.
