8. The Most Ancient Document




This is the oldest document that refers to Columbus's father and grandfather. It is a deed of the notary Quilico, drawn up in Genoa on February 21, 1429. It is shown to the public in the Columbian Hall of the State Archive of Genoa.

Translation:


Giovanni Columbus from Moconesi, living in the Quinto suburb, promised and formally agreed with Guiermo de Balbante de Alamania, weaver, present, to arrange in such a way that his son Domenico, aged around eleven, here present and consenting, will stay and remain with the aforementioned Guglielmo as an apprentice and disciple, in order to learn his art, for the next six years.
