Born a slave in Haiti in 1744, Toussaint L'Ouverture led the black rebellion of 1791. In 1801 he took control of the whole island and governed until the French defeated him in 1802. He was taken to France, where he died in prison in 1803.
Nacido esclavo en Haití en 1744, Toussaint L'Ouverture dirigió la rebelión negra de 1791. En 1801 tomó control de toda la isla y gobernó hasta que los franceses lo derrotaron en 1802. Fué llevado a Francia en donde murió en la cárcel en 1803.
