As slaves became free, they mixed with the general population, both culturally and genetically. In several Latin American countries there were paintings made of castas, the various combinations of racial types. The nomenclature is strange, and the process of classification is certainly non-scientific, although it was probably based on the general trend during the 18th century to "classify" various aspects of nature.

En muchos países de Latinoamérica se hacían pinturas sobre las castas, las diversas combinaciones de tipos raciales.
