12. Artists of African Descent

Free persons of African descent also became artists, some of them quite successful and well-known. One of these is the 18th-century mulatto Mexican painter, Juan Correa. Another is Brazil's finest individual artist of the entire colonial period, the mulatto Antônio Francisco Lisboa (1738-1814), called "O Aleijadinho" ("The Little Cripple").

Personas libres de descendencia africana también llegaron a ser artistas. Algunas tuvieron mucho éxito y hasta alcanzaron cierto renombre. Un ejemplo es el mexicano Juan Correa, pintor mulato del siglo dieciocho. Otro, es el mulato Antônio Francisco Lisboa (1738-1814) llamado "O Aleijadinho" (el pequeño lisiado), el mejor artista de toda la época colonial brasileña.
