For almost three centuries, three of every four immigrants to the New World were black. This means that until the 19th century, the hemisphere was more nearly an extension of Africa than of Europe. More blacks participated in the labor market, and the value of their work far exceeded contributions by other workers. The development of the Western Hemisphere is, to a considerable extent, the result of African exertions.
