THE NEW WORLD IN THE OLD

In return, the discovery and recognition that America was indeed a New World slowly but relentlessly changed the Old. New foods, such as potatoes, corn, beans, peanuts, tomatoes, and chocolate revolutionized the agricultural economies of Europe. The very existence of the Indians themselves challenged traditional Christian ideas about the origins of the world and forced philosophers to re-examine concepts inherited from classical times. Thus from the New World and its new peoples, there evolved a new world view.
