Only a small fraction of the inquisition's attention was focused on crypto-Jews in Mexico such as Diego Lopez. The Inquisitors were concerned primarily with more mundane breaches of Catholic faith and orthodoxy, such as blasphemy, bigamy, witchcraft, impersonation of priests, and priests soliciting the favors of women in the confessional. Inquisition records provide much valuable information concerning social life and acceptable standards of behavior in New Spain. |
