The colonization of New Spainís far northern frontier owed its success in large measure to the efforts of Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries, who stationed themselves in remote regions of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The missions, together with the military presidios that often accompanied them, served as vehicles to introduce European culture to the frontier. |
