Columbus Landing in Indias
Theodore De Bry, 1590s (?)

The works of Dutch painter and engraver Theodore De Bry (1528-1598) and his descendants were used in numerous published accounts of European adventures in the New World. Some engravings (like the planting scene on panel 10) were based on drawings made by visitors to America; others were interpretations of written reports. The fanciful version of the first encounter between Columbus and the Indians deftly conveys the European impression that the Old World was bringing a superior way of life to heathen peoples. Note the Biblical allusion of gold, frankincense, and myrrh presented to Columbus by the Indians.
