HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT

In hand-to-hand combat with a heavily armored opponent, where swords were ineffective, knights fought with a variety of weapons, including many that were derived from the axe or other domestic tools. Some of these were the standard equipment of foot soldiers, who could not use a sword because of their lowly status.
