The cross-shaped hilt of early swords had a deep spiritual significance to Christian knights, who felt that they were indeed taking up the sword of the Spirit in their crusades to the Holy Land. When knights ceased to wear steel gauntlets, the hilt had to be enlarged and improved, to protect the hand.
