St. James, brother of the beloved Apostle John, was believed to have brought the Gospel to Spain before he was martyred. His relics were said to be enshrined at Compostela, and he was adopted as patron saint by Spain. His name "Santiago" echoed as the battle cry of the conquistadors in America.
