Born to French peasants in 1412, Joan heard voices urging her to restore French sovereignty in the land. At the age of eighteen, she led the French army to victory over the English. Captured and tried for heresy, she was burned at the stake as a witch when she was only nineteen. She was canonized in 1920 as a Holy Maiden.
