Maurice, the patron saint of foot soldiers and sword-smiths, was a member of the Theban Legion, a brigade of Christian soldiers recruited in Upper Egypt. According to legend, the members of the legion were martyred in A.D. 287 for refusing to sacrifice to the gods.
