As Prince of Wales, Edward led an English army to a decisive victory over the French at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. Celebrated by the French chronicler Jean Froissart as "the chief flower of chivalry of all the world," he was, unfortunately, cut down in his prime by a painful and crippling disease.
