"Maximilian" Armor
German, ca 1525

Named after the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I, in whose reign it first appeared, this fluted armor is one of the most beautiful styles ever produced. The fluting actually strengthened the pieces, while reducing their weight. This armor weighs only 49 pounds; the jousting armor, 100 pounds. "Maximilian" armor was used primarily in tournament lists and parades, however, since knights preferred a plainer, less expensive harness for the battlefield.
