HELMETS

Helmets were designed for the knight's physical salvation from blows that rained upon his head in actual warfare or the mock warfare of jousts and tournaments, where combat was fierce and blows were sometimes lethal. After one tournament, a great English knight, Sir William Marshall, was discovered kneeling before the anvil in the blacksmith's shop, having his battered helmet pried from his head.
