Why are there no great women artists? Although Sofonisba's work was praised by Michelangelo and influenced Caravaggio, illustrations were routinely excluded from standard art history texts. This ban has been lifted by Frederick Hartt in his newly-published third edition of Art of the Italian Renaissance.
