The Enigma of Mexico
Whether in or out of power, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (1794-1876) dominated Mexico for more than twenty years. Exiled in Cuba at the outbreak of war, he informed President Polk that he would persuade Mexico to end the conflict and sell the northern territory. When Polk permitted him to reenter the country, however, he took control of the army and led the fighting for another year. |
