Although Monterrey, the principal city of northern Mexico, was heavily fortified, General Taylor's soldiers were eager for battle and confident of victory. After three days of fierce combat and heavy losses, the Yankees finally entered the city, where they had to fight hand-to-hand with soldiers and civilians. The Mexican commander, General Pedro de Ampudia, surrendered to avert a final blood-bath in the grand plaza. |
