Deeply offended by the contemptuous attitudes and harsh measures of their conquerors, the Californians rose in revolt on September 23, 1846, and assembled an army of lancers who defeated the Yankees in several encounters. To win this second war in California, the United States had to improvise an infantry consisting of sailors, marines, and dismounted dragoons. |
