The Californians felt no great loyalty to their remote government in Mexico City. The province operated virtually as an independent republic, and some citizens advocated annexation to the United States. From the first incident on June 14, 1846, to the apparent conclusion of hostilities on August 13, the first phase of the war in California involved little military exertion by either side. |
